An efficient flyer is one that can spin freely for a long period of time with minimal resistance. Low resistance in the flyer means less effort is required to keep it moving, which directly affects how easy and comfortable a wheel feels to treadle. Which flyer size is best for you?
4 ounce flyer - popular for spinning fine to light worsted weight yarns. Many antique and traditional wheels have bobbins about the same size as our 4 ounce bobbin. The 4 ounce flyer is standard on the Queen Bee, Pollywog, and an option for the Echo.
4A ounce flyer - same size as the 4 ounce flyer with a built-in accelerator (an additional whorl) for extra high speeds for spinning extra fine cobweb yarns and short staple fibers. The 4A flyer design is an option for the Firefly, Monarch, and Echo.
8 ounce flyer - comparable to the standard or classic size of popular modern brands of spinning wheels on the market today. Our customers find the 8 oz a perfect size for spinning and plying all weights of yarn for knitting and crochet. The 8 ounce flyer is standard on the King Bee, and an option on the Firefly, Monarch, Echo, and Hopper.
12 ounce flyer - engineered for customers who purchase a Pollywog and want a larger flyer and bobbin size. This flyer does not fit on any wheels other than the Pollywog.
16 ounce flyer - popular for spinners wanting to spin medium weight to bulky yarns and are considering a wheel that is both portable and can spin art yarns. The 16 ounce flyer is standard on the Worker Bee and Bullfrog and an option for the Echo, Hopper, Monarch, and Firefly.
32 ounce flyer - for production art and bulky yarn spinners with spacious bobbin capacity for big projects, and big textures. Although this flyer size can spin light worsted weight yarn, the momentum might be too heavy for spinners to use it as a primary size for lightweight yarns. The 32 ounce flyer is an option for the Echo, Hopper, Monarch, and Firefly.
64 ounce flyer - exclusive to SpinOlution, and is the largest bobbin capacity in the industry. Expert production spinners find this size ideal for spinning single-ply bulky weight yarns. Each one is crafted and balanced by hand. The 64 ounce flyer and bobbin is an option for the Monarch and Firefly.
Flyer Compatibility
The Monarch / Firefly flyer is the same part and compatible with the Echo base but is 2 inches shorter than an Echo flyer so the orifice height of a Monarch / Firefly flyer on an Echo base will be 2 inches shorter and require a longer drive band.
The Echo flyer is 2 inches taller than the Monarch and Firefly flyer and can fit on the Echo, Monarch, and Firefly Base. The Echo flyer on a Monarch / Firefly base will be 2 inches taller and require a longer drive band.
The Pollywog flyer can only be used on the Pollywog.
The Bullfrog flyer can only be used on the Bullfrog.
The Hopper flyer can only be used on the Hopper.
SpinOlution wheels are engineered with ergonomic orifice height in mind, so it is recommended to use the Monarch / Firefly flyer heads on those wheels and the Echo head on Echo wheels. That said, many spinners enjoy swapping heads across these wheels.
